Senator Mitchell is a distinguished statesman, diplomat, attorney, and former U.S. Senate Majority Leader whose career has been defined by public service, bipartisan leadership, and international peacebuilding. A graduate of Bowdoin College and Georgetown University Law Center, Mitchell served as U.S. Attorney and U.S. District Court Judge for Maine before being appointed to the United States Senate in 1980. He was elected to two full terms and served as Senate Majority Leader from 1989 until his retirement in 1995. Internationally, Mitchell is best known for chairing the peace negotiations that led to the landmark Good Friday Agreement, helping bring an end to decades of conflict in Northern Ireland. He also led the international fact-finding committee whose recommendations became known as the Mitchell Report on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and later served as U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace under President Barack Obama.
